Highlanders Seek Bounce-Back After Tough Start to MWHL Season
By Dylan Mueth, MWHL Analyst
The Missouri Highlanders entered the 2025 MWHL season with high hopes and a deep roster, but after two tough losses to open the campaign, they now find themselves in unfamiliar territory— 0-2 and searching for answers .
In last nights game, the Highlanders were overwhelmed by a dominant performance from the Moose, falling 3-10 in a game where defensive lapses and missed assignments proved costly. Despite flashes of offensive potential, the team struggled to contain the Moose’s relentless attack and paid the price on the scoreboard.
Looking to regroup, Missouri hit the ice again for a showdown with the Bruins. This time, it was a far more competitive, hard-fought battle , with the Highlanders showing grit and resilience throughout. Still, the Bruins capitalized on key opportunities and came away with a 6-4 win, handing Missouri their first defeat of the season.
"We battled hard against the Bruins, no doubt about it, and could've easily won without those bad bounces" said team captain Josh Venegoni. "But we know we can be better. It’s early in the season, and we’re learning from every shift."
One bright spot has been the team’s ability to generate offense, with several players getting on the scoresheet in both games. However, turnovers and defensive trouble have plagued the Highlanders, especially in transition against fast, skilled teams like the Moose.
Head Coach Frederick St. John remains optimistic:
“We’ve got the pieces—we just haven’t put it all together yet. These first two games showed us what we need to clean up. We’re not panicking. This is a team with a lot of character, and we’ll bounce back.”
The Highlanders are set to return to action next week with a chance to right the ship and earn their first win of the season. With a talented roster and a chip on their shoulder, don’t count them out just yet .
